I am based in the West Yorkshire Pennines, halfway between Manchester (40 minutes drive) and Leeds (30 minutes), and have been shooting news and feature pictures for over thirty years, which include ten years with the Sunday Times in London and five as the Northern staffer for Reuters. My assignments have included everything from the Romanian revolution and the first Gulf War (I worked in Eastern Turkey, Syria and Northern Iraq), portrait sessions with the likes of Robert Plant and Tina Turner, and major UK news events as diverse as the Lockerbie tragedy and political party conferences.

Prior to this I worked in my birth town of Birmingham for The Birmingham Post and Mail and latterly the Wolverhampton Express and Star. Freelance for the past twelve years, I still maintain a strong working relationship with the Sunday Times. Other clients include The Press Association, The BBC, The Times Educational Supplements, The Financial Times, Bloomberg News, numerous national magazines and several large public relations companies.

For almost half of my career I worked solely in black and white, moving to colour in the mid 1980's and going digital in 2000. I've always kept abreast of new developments, and currently use the latest high-end 16 million pixel Canon digital SLR cameras coupled with Adobe Photoshop software. My years of experience in black and white now enables me to fully exploit the fantastic possibilities offered by digital photography.

People often ask me which is the best picture I've ever taken. My usual response is "the last one" because when you're freelance every single job is important! But my favourite picture is the digital one on the right, which was taken as my son Ben and our pet cat Eric set off on a Haloween walk from home a couple of years ago.
